The Genesis of Arkoss (1975)

Every career has a starting line. Ours was 1975 at the University of Akron, playing a major college dance and show. We were barely out of high school, full of ambition, and ready to make some noise.

If you’ve ever wondered where the name Arkoss came from, there’s a story there. Our guitar player and drummer were brothers, and their father raised purebred Arabian horses. One of his prized stallions was named Arkoss. So, to give you the story straight from the horse’s mouth: that’s where it began.

The Original Lineup (1975): The chemistry of this original roster set the standard for everything that followed:

  • Jeff Vargo: Bass & Backing Vocals
  • John Russell: Drums
  • Raymond “Monie” Kulick: Lead Vocals
  • Tommy James: Rhythm Guitar & Backing Vocals
  • Jeff Russell: Lead Guitar & Backing Vocals

The accompanying photos capture us in the wild—the various rock clubs across Ohio where we cut our teeth and learned the ropes. Looking back at these, it’s clear that this was more than just a band; it was the foundation of a lifetime in music.
